Instagram doesn't tell you when someone unfollows you. That's intentional — if they did, people would unfollow way less, which hurts engagement metrics. So you have to figure it out yourself.
The method that actually works is this: Instagram lets you download a copy of your own data, including your complete followers and following lists. You take that file, run it through UnfollowMeter, and we tell you who's not following you back. Simple comparison, no account access required.
Here's how to do it in three steps.
Step 1: Download your Instagram data
Open Instagram on your phone and go to your profile. Tap the three lines (☰) in the top right corner, then scroll down to Accounts Centre.
Inside Accounts Centre: Your information and permissions → Download your information → Download or transfer information. Pick your Instagram account, then choose Some of your information. Select Followers and following from the list. On the next screen, make sure Format is set to JSON (not HTML — this is the part most people get wrong). Set date range to All time, then tap Create files.
Instagram will email you a download link — usually arrives within a few minutes for follower data.

Step 2: Download and keep the ZIP file
When the email arrives, tap the link, confirm your password if prompted, and save the ZIP file somewhere you can find it. It's small — just text data, not your photos. You don't need to unzip it.

What "unfollowers" actually means here
The list you get shows everyone you follow who isn't following you back — right now, at the time of this export. It includes people who never followed you back alongside anyone who dropped off.
If you want to know specifically who recently unfollowed you — not just who's not following you — you need two data points. Do an upload today and another one in a few weeks. The Pro tier compares them and shows you exactly who left in between.
Why can't I just check Instagram directly?
People ask this a lot. Instagram doesn't provide this information anywhere in the app. There's no "unfollowers" tab, no notification history, nothing. The follower count number changes but Instagram deliberately doesn't tell you who moved it.
Apps in the App Store that claim to track this in real-time are almost always either fake (showing you made-up data) or using unofficial scraping methods that put your account at risk. The data export method is the official, safe way — slower, but your account doesn't get flagged for it.

Does this work on private accounts?
Yes. The data export includes your followers and following list regardless of whether your account is public or private.
How long does the Instagram export take?
For follower data only, usually 2–10 minutes. If you requested your full account data (photos, DMs, everything), it can take a few hours. That's why we recommend selecting only "Followers and following" — it's faster and the file is much smaller.
Can I do this on desktop instead of mobile?
Yes. Go to instagram.com → Settings → Privacy and Security → Data Download. The path is slightly different but the result is the same JSON file.
