Yes, you can. But it requires a bit more work than tapping a button — because Instagram deliberately doesn't show this information.
Here's the honest picture: Instagram gives you access to your own raw data if you request it. Your followers list, your following list — it's all in there. What Instagram doesn't do is compare the two and flag who left. That's the gap UnfollowMeter fills.

Why Instagram doesn't just show you this
It's not an oversight. Instagram made a deliberate choice not to show unfollower notifications because they know it would increase conflict and reduce engagement. If every unfollow triggered a notification, people would think twice about unfollowing — but it would also create more drama and negative interactions on the platform.
The same logic applies to showing you a historical list. Instagram keeps that data internally; they just don't surface it to you. Their export feature exists because of data privacy laws (primarily GDPR in Europe), not out of generosity. But it works.
Instagram keeps the data. They're just not handing it to you directly — you have to download your own export to get it.
The problem with App Store unfollower apps
There's no shortage of them. A lot are built around Instagram's old API, which used to allow third-party apps to see follower data. Instagram shut that down in 2018 after the Cambridge Analytica scandal prompted them to lock down the developer API.
So any app claiming live, real-time unfollower tracking either:
- Is using unofficial scraping that violates Instagram's terms (and can get your account restricted or banned)
- Is showing you fake or cached data to keep you using the app
- Is asking for your Instagram password to "log in as you" — which is a huge security risk regardless of whether the app is trustworthy

What about checking one specific person?
If you want to know whether a specific person still follows you — not your whole list — you can just go to their profile. If they follow you, you'll see "Follows you" next to the Follow/Following button under their bio. If that label isn't there, they don't follow you.
This works for one-off checks. But if you want to audit your whole following list, the data export method is the only practical option.
Can I see when someone unfollowed me?
No — and this is a limitation even with the export method. Instagram's data file tells you your current state, not your history. There's no timestamp showing when someone joined or left your followers list.
The closest you can get to knowing when is doing regular exports and comparing them. If someone appeared on your non-followers list between your June export and your July export, they unfollowed you sometime in June. That's as precise as it gets.
